In August of 1981, the citizens of East Dallas celebrated the birth of the City’s first neighborhood cultural center. From ancient civilizations to the present day, artists have been drawn to the symbolic richness and emotional resonance embedded in depictions of this universal symbol. Contemporary artists, including the fifty-nine that are featured in the 2024 El Corazón show, continue this tradition by incorporating the heart into their creations, adding their unique perspectives to the ongoing narrative of its significance in art. Last week we put out a call to hear about Black-owned museums, galleries, and art spaces that we might not know about and as of this writing, there are twenty-three spaces on our list.

Upcoming Events

In 1980, the Dallas City Arts Program, the Park and Recreation Department and the East Dallas Chamber of Commerce joined together to renovate the old Bath House. Now the Bath House Cultural Center is home to a 116-seat black box theater, three galleries, the White Rock Lake Museum, and other gathering places. The Bath House hosts numerous art exhibitions, theater and dance performances, literature and poetry readings, and other local events. It is also the host venue of the annual Festival of Independent Theatres (FIT). Today the Bath House Cultural Center serves the artists and independent theatres of Dallas.

Chicago Park District took over operation of the city-owned bath houses in the 1970s. Today, the building has been carefully renovated into an upscale community and business meeting space after serving as a private residence for decades. The monumental main room has been redesigned as a serene yet functional space complete with state-of-the-art audio/visual capabilities and a deluxe catering kitchen.

In addition to the art sale, there is food, music and a silent auction. Built in 1930 on what were then the rural shores of White Rock Lake, the “Old Bath House” was one of the first uses of Art Deco architecture in the southwest. The building provided lockers, changing rooms, rentable swim suits and concessions for the thousands of people that drove from all over North Texas to swim in the lake. The 116-seat Bath House theater is home to many of Dallas’ finest theater companies.

Participants report feeling more physical sensations and dropping into a relaxed state quickly. We provide everything you need to be comfortable – a yoga mat, bolster, pillow, and eye mask. The Bath House Cultural Center is open Tuesday-Saturday from 12 to 6 PM. In 1958, it was donated to Philadelphia where it has stood as a cultural center, museum and beautiful destination ever since. Los Angeles, CA 90016WebsiteThe Lula Washington Contemporary Dance Foundation (LWCDF) was founded in 1980 by Lula and Erwin Washington to provide a creative outlet for minority dance artists in South Los Angeles. In this sound bath, the practitioner blends the sounds of 8 gongs and 16 crystal singing bowls. This helps listeners cultivate a relaxed mind and body and an expanded state of awareness. Many people reach a deep state of physical relaxation while becoming more awake and aware of their inner world during this event. Bath House Cultural Center first opened its doors in 1930 as an actual bathhouse for the thousands of people who came to swim in White Rock Lake.

The Bath House (one of the first Art Deco buildings in the southwest) is a Dallas Landmark and was originally completed in 1930. It was designed by Dallas architect Jon Carsey, who was influenced by the Paris Exposition of 1925. When it opened, the Municipal Bath House (as it was then known) was used by the citizens of Dallas as an escape from the summer heat. There was a sandy beach that extended from the building out into the lake, locker rooms on the ground floor and concession stands in the basement. In 1958 the Bath House closed and swimming was prohibited to allow the lake to be used as a water supply for the city.

Each attendee gets to use premium crystal rods during the sound bath to amplify the experience. We provide everything you need to be comfortable – yoga mat, bolster, pillow, and eye mask. In this event, we layer recorded sounds & live shamanic drumming with gongs and crystal singing bowls.

The Bath House Cultural Center is located on the eastern shore of White Rock Lake at the end of Northcliff Drive, off of Buckner Blvd. The Bath House Cultural Center is proud to offer a variety of art programs for the public. We encourage and invite folks to view the exhibition before it closes at 1960 National Ave, San Diego, CA 92113, Thursday-Sunday from 11am-5pm.

Our individual and philanthropic involvement rewards, incubates and benefits emerging and established artists. Through our conservancy funding of this landmark building, we have created warm, vibrant and inviting spaces that make the creative arts approachable to all who visit, encouraging conversation, exploration and enjoyment. The former Lincoln Street Bath House is one of just four municipal bath houses still standing in Chicago. The city built 19 public bath houses between 1894 and 1918 because indoor plumbing and bathing facilities were not common in urban dwellings at the time.
