Cabanas & Patio Covers

It combines elements to convey an organic coastal air, inviting you to unwind and enjoy the beauty of nature. The dining room of this open-concept living area effortlessly combines coastal home interior design elements in a more minimalist setup. It strikes the perfect balance between simplicity and elegance, creating an inviting space for both daily and formal meal gatherings. White upholstery and washed-out wood emphasize the dining set’s beachy character. Above the setting, a modern crystal chandelier adds a dash of subdued glam.

Screened Lanais

If you follow the advice below, you'll have a better idea of building a cost-effective screened porch that will look stunning. A lanai is an outdoor enclosure with a screen and paved surface area on the outside of a home. The building roof covers the lanai and is complete with screen enclosures. First up, I wanted to show you how many different directions you can take this in. You can make your lanai really fancy and chic or laid back and comfortable.

Repurposed Wooden Crates for Storage

The seating along the perimeter invites a more relaxed posturing while bar seats and tables are designed to hold multiple guests. The mesmerizing open-concept living room is a dreamy contemporary beachy oasis. Its coastal cottage design style blurs the lines between indoors and outdoors, perfectly capturing the essence of seaside living. With a color scheme inspired by the soothing hues of white, light blue, and natural light wood, this space radiates tranquility and relaxation. Over time, lanais have evolved into modern-day outdoor living spaces, blending traditional and contemporary design elements.

Difference Between a Lanai, Veranda, Porch, And Patio

Today, lanais can be found in homes and resorts around the world, providing a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor living. Given that there are so many different types of outdoor living spaces, you may be wondering how exactly a lanai distinguishes itself from say, a screened porch. Keep in mind that lanais, patios, porches, and verandas are all within the same general family but feature different characteristics.

Cozy Retreats

You can install light-colored screens to keep the space bright and fresh. However, there are some subtle technical differences between these outdoor spaces. The difference between a lanai and a patio is that patios are found at the ground level and are not covered by a roof. A retractable roof offers ultimate flexibility, allowing you to control the amount of sunlight and airflow in your lanai.

Wood Decking

Subsequently, Florida adapted the design, as lanais are highly practical for the state’s hot and humid climate. If you’re interested in knowing more about how these outdoor spaces are built, check out the following video from Bob Vila. Home gardeners can appreciate having a lanai at their disposal as well.

Aluminum doors are considered the best choice because they're durable. While wooden doors might look more attractive, they can't produce the clean seal and are prone to sagging. Although this may vary by state, the general rule is that outdoor patios do not count towards the square feet of your home.

Cute Lanai Ideas You’ll Love

There’s nothing like enjoying a fresh, summer meal while feeling the light, warm breeze and hearing the birds chirping in the background. A lanai is a roofed outdoor space attached to a house that originates from Hawaii and is typically found in tropical areas. The term “lanai” in Hawaiian is often translated to balcony or patio, but the structure is distinctive from either of these two. The project’s site and location give it abundant exposure to nature and its elements.

The semi-covered structure allows them to keep their plants in partial shade during summer and protected from the elements throughout winter. Consider if you need ceiling fans, lights, and even if you want to install a flat-screen. It's advisable to have at least a general idea about electrical needs before calling an electrician. This solution might cost you less, but the problem is that the aluminum wears out quickly. Unfortunately, the long-term cost is not the only disadvantage of this approach. Hand-stretched screening requires trim removal, which is a tedious process.

Lighting – You can add twinkle lights, which is my favorite form of lighting for both indoors and outdoors. Naturally, since the Lanai is in both, they are even more perfect. All furniture in this modern lanai is carefully selected to enhance the overall aesthetic. The lightweight forms and natural light wood textures exude a sense of airiness, perfectly complementing the surrounding environment. Gazing at the ceiling, captivatingly elegant beams accentuate the organic flair of this serene sanctuary. Their modern rustic appeal seamlessly blends with the overall coastal home design aesthetic while adding a significant touch of character.

Remember, the aim is to create an artful balance between your interior style and the outdoors. UV-treated canvas prints featuring tropical, beach, or floral themes greatly enhance a lanai’s relaxing, vacation-like vibe. Look for images in bright, vibrant colors to echo the surrounding natural beauty.

When building a lanai, the room next to it will lose a considerable amount of daylight. Decide how much natural light you want inside your screened porch. Some of the options include ceiling fans with lights or recessed lighting. Building at least one skylight will drastically improve natural lighting inside your lanai. Commonly seen in both commercial and residential architecture in Hawaii, it’s no surprise that residents of a tropical climate have fully embraced lanais. Typically, though a lanai has walls, at least one side is open to the elements (or can be opened when the weather is inviting).

Then add modern statement lighting to help to update the room and give it a sense of creative edge. You could choose sconces or a chandelier that features angles and sleek metal. If your porch is larger, then consider creating a living room feel.

10 Easy Halloween Nail Art Ideas You Can Definitely DIY

For an elegant take on Halloween nails, try a glossy black mani with a chunky gold glitter accent nail. Focus the glitter at the base of the cuticle and thin it out toward the center of the nail for a diffused effect. Fruity nail art for summer is always fun — but the fear of the look coming off as juvenile is understandable. "If you're feeling less cutesy, negative space shapes add dimension," Tuttle suggests.

Black & White Designs

We talk a lot about what to put on your nails, but what about their shape? Coffin nails can be worn all year long, but the spookiest night of the year is a great time to dress them in all-black. First, cut the sides of your tips before filing them at an angle, while keeping the top straight (or slightly pointed depending on your preference).

Whichever method you choose, you'll want to seal everything in with a matte top coat. Grab your favorite red nail polish to create the thin, blood-red base, and finish off by painting tips black to recreate the look. To recreate nail artist Amy Tran's simple Halloween nail design, use a toothpick dipped in black nail polish to create the points of the bat. From there, connect the points, creating swooped wings and a diamond-shaped body.

Wednesday Addams Approved

Fake blood is to Halloween what fireworks are to the Fourth of July. This dripping manicure is the perfect amount of kitschy and classic. To DIY, use a toothpick with a hefty drop of polish on the end. Dollop it on your nail and lightly draw it towards the cuticle to create the drip appearance.

Cute Skeleton Nails

This look borrows from Fourth of July nails with all the stars and stripes. The orange-gold foil tips paired with silver and black reads as Halloween-themed without going full-fledged with spiders, gore, and ghosts. Aura nails are making a comeback this season and we're not mad about it. According to this tutorial, you should apply a base coat before using a sponge to lightly dab a second shade on. This celestial set gives off witchy vibes without immediately reading as "Halloween," making it perfect for those seeking a more ambiguous set. While pros can top the black polish with freehand gold drawings, you can get a similar look with nail stickers.

Googly Eyes

Of course, you can always skip the nail art altogether and opt for a solid-color mani in a Halloween-y shade instead. That includes black, white, and green, but we have a soft spot for orange—it's perfect for fall in general, looking just as seasonal on November 1 as it does on October 31. This mystical manicure is the perfect blend of sophistication and fantasy—making it an ideal look for the Halloween season. These free-flowing, drippy French tips in the classic Halloween shades of black, white, and orange are just adorable.

Grab some nail tape and lay it right at the tips of your nails before painting in the area with your black polish. There's something about the West Coast that is just effortlessly cool, laid back, and very chill — especially Los Angeles. Even die-hard New Yorkers, clad in their monochrome tones, are susceptible to falling for the jeans and T-shirt uniform that's synonymous with California. Los Angeles nail art designs are some of the most innovative in the country — full of color, unstructured lines, shapes, and your occasional fruit every now and then.

In August of 1981, the citizens of East Dallas celebrated the birth of the City’s first neighborhood cultural center. From ancient civilizations to the present day, artists have been drawn to the symbolic richness and emotional resonance embedded in depictions of this universal symbol. Contemporary artists, including the fifty-nine that are featured in the 2024 El CorazĂ³n show, continue this tradition by incorporating the heart into their creations, adding their unique perspectives to the ongoing narrative of its significance in art. Last week we put out a call to hear about Black-owned museums, galleries, and art spaces that we might not know about and as of this writing, there are twenty-three spaces on our list.

In 1980, the Dallas City Arts Program, the Park and Recreation Department and the East Dallas Chamber of Commerce joined together to renovate the old Bath House. Now the Bath House Cultural Center is home to a 116-seat black box theater, three galleries, the White Rock Lake Museum, and other gathering places. The Bath House hosts numerous art exhibitions, theater and dance performances, literature and poetry readings, and other local events. It is also the host venue of the annual Festival of Independent Theatres (FIT). Today the Bath House Cultural Center serves the artists and independent theatres of Dallas.

Chicago Park District took over operation of the city-owned bath houses in the 1970s. Today, the building has been carefully renovated into an upscale community and business meeting space after serving as a private residence for decades. The monumental main room has been redesigned as a serene yet functional space complete with state-of-the-art audio/visual capabilities and a deluxe catering kitchen.

In addition to the art sale, there is food, music and a silent auction. Built in 1930 on what were then the rural shores of White Rock Lake, the “Old Bath House” was one of the first uses of Art Deco architecture in the southwest. The building provided lockers, changing rooms, rentable swim suits and concessions for the thousands of people that drove from all over North Texas to swim in the lake. The 116-seat Bath House theater is home to many of Dallas’ finest theater companies.

Participants report feeling more physical sensations and dropping into a relaxed state quickly. We provide everything you need to be comfortable – a yoga mat, bolster, pillow, and eye mask. The Bath House Cultural Center is open Tuesday-Saturday from 12 to 6 PM. In 1958, it was donated to Philadelphia where it has stood as a cultural center, museum and beautiful destination ever since. Los Angeles, CA 90016WebsiteThe Lula Washington Contemporary Dance Foundation (LWCDF) was founded in 1980 by Lula and Erwin Washington to provide a creative outlet for minority dance artists in South Los Angeles. In this sound bath, the practitioner blends the sounds of 8 gongs and 16 crystal singing bowls. This helps listeners cultivate a relaxed mind and body and an expanded state of awareness. Many people reach a deep state of physical relaxation while becoming more awake and aware of their inner world during this event. Bath House Cultural Center first opened its doors in 1930 as an actual bathhouse for the thousands of people who came to swim in White Rock Lake.

The Bath House (one of the first Art Deco buildings in the southwest) is a Dallas Landmark and was originally completed in 1930. It was designed by Dallas architect Jon Carsey, who was influenced by the Paris Exposition of 1925. When it opened, the Municipal Bath House (as it was then known) was used by the citizens of Dallas as an escape from the summer heat. There was a sandy beach that extended from the building out into the lake, locker rooms on the ground floor and concession stands in the basement. In 1958 the Bath House closed and swimming was prohibited to allow the lake to be used as a water supply for the city.

Each attendee gets to use premium crystal rods during the sound bath to amplify the experience. We provide everything you need to be comfortable – yoga mat, bolster, pillow, and eye mask. In this event, we layer recorded sounds & live shamanic drumming with gongs and crystal singing bowls.

The Bath House Cultural Center is located on the eastern shore of White Rock Lake at the end of Northcliff Drive, off of Buckner Blvd. The Bath House Cultural Center is proud to offer a variety of art programs for the public. We encourage and invite folks to view the exhibition before it closes at 1960 National Ave, San Diego, CA 92113, Thursday-Sunday from 11am-5pm.

Our individual and philanthropic involvement rewards, incubates and benefits emerging and established artists. Through our conservancy funding of this landmark building, we have created warm, vibrant and inviting spaces that make the creative arts approachable to all who visit, encouraging conversation, exploration and enjoyment. The former Lincoln Street Bath House is one of just four municipal bath houses still standing in Chicago. The city built 19 public bath houses between 1894 and 1918 because indoor plumbing and bathing facilities were not common in urban dwellings at the time.

CAST: About Universal Design for Learning

And explain that you’ll keep working with the students and their families to build the skills and interest to make that happen. You could share a mini-lesson on butterfly metamorphosis and have students use a guided worksheet as they write. Or you could set up stations where students are grouped using flexible grouping around understanding of the topic, language ability, or reading level. Visual notations and symbols will always be inaccessible to some learners, who rely on these non-visual alternatives. In contrast, other learners will gain skill in interpreting codes with more support.

What does UDL look like in the classroom?

This means providing students with different ways to access and understand the content. For example, you might give a visual representation of the content, an audio version, and a written transcript. When teachers use UDL principles in their instruction, students learn more and achieve better outcomes. UDL provides ways to meet the needs of all learners, including those who are traditionally marginalized or left behind. The third core principle of UDL is to provide multiple means of engagement.

What Is Universal Design for Learning (UDL)?.

What type of school are you?

universal design for learning udl

UDLA has options that support self-directed learners (resources, automated course) to more those that prefer more structure and guidance (in-person workshops, moderated online course work). Training and practice helps you slowly implement over time so that you aren’t overwhelmed but can slowly build towards mastery. As you improve in your implementation, your instruction and design will be more effective. UDL isn’t specifically for kids with learning and thinking differences. But it attempts to build in flexibility that can be adjusted for every student’s strengths and needs.

Accessible Text Formats

Inclusive school culture features training for special education and general education teachers, with the outcome of collaboration and shared responsibility. Fourth, there is research on specific applications of UDL within learning environments, including conditions necessary for implementation, common barriers, and lessons from the field. This new area of research is in its early stages but will take a more prominent place as full-scale curricular applications and system-wide implementations are developed. It should be noted that this is another area in which we greatly encourage contributions from the research field.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): A teacher’s guide

Universal design for learning (UDL) is a teaching approach that works to accommodate the needs and abilities of all learners and eliminates unnecessary hurdles in the learning process. This means developing a flexible learning environment in which information is presented in multiple ways, students engage in learning in a variety of ways, and students are provided options when demonstrating their learning. The UDL Guidelines are a tool used in the implementation of Universal Design for Learning, a framework to improve and optimize teaching and learning for all people based on scientific insights into how humans learn. Learn more about the Universal Design for Learning framework from CAST. The UDL Guidelines can be used by educators, curriculum developers, researchers, parents, and anyone else who wants to implement the UDL framework in a learning environment. These guidelines offer a set of concrete suggestions that can be applied to any discipline or domain to ensure that all learners can access and participate in meaningful, challenging learning opportunities.

Examples of Universal Design for Learning in Classrooms

As educators, many of us already incorporate aspects of the Guidelines into our practice; however, there may still be barriers in our learning experiences that we haven’t noticed or haven’t yet encountered. The UDL Guidelines offer a systematic structure for addressing these barriers and for intentionally planning for learner variability. To address the needs of all of our learners, we need to be purposeful, proactive, and reflective in our design by constantly referring to the Guidelines as we plan our learning experiences. The Guidelines are not meant to be applied to just one aspect of the curriculum or to just one group of students. Instead, the Guidelines are a tool to support the development of a shared language in the design of goals, assessments, methods, and materials that lead to accessible and challenging learning experiences for all.

Improved Learning Outcomes for All Students

For example, you might allow students to use other forms of communication, such as speaking, writing, and drawing. Once you have assessed your students’ needs, you can customize your instruction to meet their individual needs. This could mean providing different representations of the content, different ways for students to interact with it, and different ways to express themselves. UDL is a research-based framework that places great emphasis on building self-directed learners. Learners will explore the factors that drive motivation and how those can be leveraged in the classroom.

Professional Learning Opportunities

The third principle, multiple means of engagement, is about tapping into students' interests and motivations to foster deeper participation in the learning process. UDL emphasizes the significance of choice and relevance in learning tasks. This shift toward proactive, adaptable learning experiences is a significant departure from the traditional, rigid education model and is crucial in the pursuit of genuinely adaptive learning experiences for every student.

Provide Multiple Means of Action and Expression

universal design for learning udl

But there might also be a video for students to watch or an online class forum for discussion. There might even be a board game that students play to understand the history of the war. The primary focus is on finding ways to teach the material to the many types of learners in a classroom. UDLA is pleased to offer these no-cost professional learning opportunities.

Teachers can use UDL to design instruction that provides special education students with what they need and at the same time benefits all learners. UDL capitalizes on the concept that what is good for some is good for all. To support students with language skills, UDL champions the creation of learning environments that consider everyone. It extends beyond merely addressing disabilities, visible or otherwise, and speaks to the very essence of individual learning needs.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a framework to improve and optimize teaching and learning for all people based on scientific insights into how humans learn. It also gives you some questions to consider and lists some examples of the principles in action. You can print a one-page version of this chart to have on hand while planning a lesson, activity, or routine for your students.

It’s important to teach to each student’s individual strengths, skills and needs. This is true for all kids — not just kids with learning and attention issues. The evolution of CAST’s UDL Guidelines has been and continues to be a dynamic, collaborative, and developmental process. Since that time, we have collected and specifically solicited feedback from the field.

UDL describes human variability based on parts of the brain that manage the “why” (affective network), the “what” (recognition network), and the “how” (strategic network) of learning. Watch as CAST co-founder David Rose explains why UDL emphasizes variability instead of disability. Universal design can be found just about anywhere you look — both inside and outside your school. Curb cuts change sidewalks so that they’re accessible to the greatest range of users, including people who use wheelchairs and those pushing strollers.

CAST created the Universal Design for Learning framework, and it remains one of our core levers of change to help make learning inclusive and transformative for everyone. UDL is regarded so highly that it’s mentioned by name in the nation’s main education law. The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) encourages states and districts to use federal funding to help teachers expand the use of UDL.

It’s about building in flexibility that can be adjusted for every student’s strengths and needs. You may, for example, have a student in your class with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. Ways to reduce barriers could include helping them set a routine, learning more about their needs from their family, or referring them to a school specialist. When teaching, I aimed to address many barriers before we began a unit. Sometimes students didn’t have background knowledge, so we’d cover relevant topics and skills at the start. Other times, content wasn’t academically interesting or culturally relevant, so we found ways to tie it to their lives.
